Berthold Volz

Berthold August Emil Volz (born July 30, 1839 in Rügenwalde in Pomerania, † December 1, 1899 in Breslau ) was a German geographer and historical researcher .

Berthold Volz had attended high school in Köslin before studying philology and history at the universities of Berlin and Greifswald from 1857 to 1861.

After completing the prescribed year of probation at the grammar schools in Köslin and Stolp in Pomerania, Volz was initially employed as a full teacher at the grammar schools in Köslin and Schwerin in Mecklenburg, then as a senior teacher at the grammar schools in Mühlhausen / Thuringia and at the Royal Pedagogy of the Francke Foundations in Halle an der Saale .

In 1872 Volz was appointed director of the grammar school in Wittstock / Dosse , in 1874 he took over the management of the Viktoria grammar school in Potsdam .

Between 1878 and 1889 he made repeated trips to Italy and Greece.

Volz is the author of several historical works, geographic non-fiction books and numerous articles and reviews that have been published in various journals. After Alfred Kirchhoff's resignation in 1882, he took over the publication of the new editions of HA Daniel's well-known, high-circulation guide for teaching geography and the geography textbook for higher education institutions . In 1878 he was commissioned to give scientific lectures to Prince Heinrich of Prussia , and in 1880 to Princess Victoria of Prussia. He participated intensively in social life and was committed to patriotic goals. Volz was a member of the board of the Wroclaw Department of the German Colonial Society as well as the board of the Silesian Main Association of the Gustav Adolf Foundation .

On November 28, 1899, Berthold Volz underwent a life-threatening operation, which turned out to be unhappy and which put an early end to his creative life on December 1, 1899.
