Bertil Gardener

Bertil Edgar Gärtner (born December 13, 1924 in Gothenburg , † September 20, 2009 in Onsala ) was an Evangelical Lutheran bishop of the Church of Sweden .

Gärtner studied theology at Uppsala University and passed his theological candidate examination there in 1948 . In 1955 he became a doctor of theology and lecturer in the New Testament. From 1965 to 1969, Gärtner was Professor of New Testament Exegesis at Princeton Theological Seminary . In 1969 he became provost of the cathedral in the Diocese of Gothenburg . In 1970 he was elected bishop of the diocese and held this office until 1991. As bishop he spoke out against female pastors , among other things .

As an exegete, Gärtner was an expert on the Apocrypha of the New Testament , especially the Gospel of Thomas , and also dealt with the Qumran writings that had been developed since 1947 . He belonged to the working group for church renewal ( Arbetsgemenskapen Kyrklig Förnyelse ), which is part of the high church movement . In the 1980s he participated in the formation of the Svenska kyrkans fria synod and was also active in Oasrörelsen . Until his death he wrote a blog about church issues. Gärtner can be seen as a spiritual father of the Mission Province founded in 2003 .
