Bertrand Marchand (born April 27, 1953 in Dinan ) is a former French football player and current coach .

Player career

In his 13-year career, Bertrand Marchand worked for three French football clubs. The first eight years he played for Stade Rennes , half of that time was served in the top French division. He then moved to the second division for the football club in the small town of Montmorillon . Two years later Marchand went one league lower to the then third division and today's amateur club Thouars Foot 79 .

Coaching career

In 1985, at the age of 32, he ended his time as an active soccer player and took over the coaching position at Thouars Foot 79. He remained loyal to his club for a full twelve years until he was hired by his first professional club, Stade Rennes , where he filled various coaching positions in the youth and reserve teams. In 2002 he went to the first division club EA Guingamp and got his first contract as head coach in professional football. After the club was able to reach 7th place in 2003, he was relegated in 2004 and dismissed the Frenchman as a coach. Then Marchand moved abroad for the first time and became the coach of Club Africain Tunis , one of the most successful Tunisian football clubs. In 2006 he reached the final of the national cup with the team, but lost 4-5 on penalties against Espérance Sportive de Tunis . From 2007 Marchand coached another very successful Tunisian club with Étoile Sportive du Sahel . In his first season there, in addition to winning the championship, he also triumphed in the African Champions League . In the final second leg , his team al Ahly defeated Cairo from Egypt 3-1 (first leg 0-0). In the following season, the African Super Cup was also won. After the season he took over the coaching position at Al-Khor Sports Club in the Qatar Stars League . In June 2010 Marchand was replaced by his compatriot Alain Perrin and was then coach of the Tunisian national football team until the end of the year .
