Jean-Baptiste Besard , more rarely Jean Baptiste Besarde , Latinized Ioannes Baptista Besardus (* around 1567 in Besançon or Jussey ; † around 1625 in southern Germany, possibly in Augsburg ), was a French lawyer, lutenist and important composer of his time.

Life

Jean-Baptiste Besar was the son of a merchant from Besançon and obtained the degree of Dr. from the University of Dole in 1587. jur., but was also interested in music, physics, medicine and alchemy .

In Rome, Jean-Baptiste Besard received lute lessons from Lorenzo Tracetti , alias Lorenzino, suonatore di liuto . In addition to many other studies, he was engaged in the collection and composition of works for this instrument. Since he was traveling almost constantly from 1600, mainly in Italy and Germany, his collections show a very wide-ranging picture of lute music of this time.

His Thesaurus Harmonicus collection, published in 1603, contains 403 lute pieces, some with singing; 21 composers are represented, including John Dowland , Elias Mertel and Besard himself, and almost all musical forms of the time appear. Many pieces were incorporated into later collections. In 1617 the somewhat smaller Novus Partus collection (61 pieces, including ensemble pieces with Tiorbino ) was published. Both collections are important in terms of their size, the universality of artistic taste, their influence and their historical context.

Besard's detailed instructions on playing the lute in the Thesaurus (also revised in the Novus Partus) deal particularly with fingerings and were later translated into English ( Robert Dowland , Varietie of Lute-lessons, London 1610: “Wherento is annexed certaine observations belonging to Lute-playing by Jon Baptiste Besardus of Visconti «).
