The Guinness World Records led as a record holder.

Life

Besse Berry Brown was on 26 August 1896 in Sullivan County in the US state born Tennessee, the third of eight children. She graduated from East Tennessee State Normal School in 1916 and then worked as a teacher in her native Tennessee before moving to the state of Georgia just as America was entering World War I in 1917. She continued to teach as a teacher in Between , Georgia. In 1924 she married Luther Harris Cooper (1895–1963).

At the time of her 115th birthday, Besse Cooper had four children, twelve grandchildren and many great and great-great-grandchildren. Her 76-year-old son Sidney Cooper told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that his mother could still "think, speak clearly, and remember things." She lived in Monroe , Georgia. Cooper died of respiratory failure on December 4, 2012 after suffering from gastrointestinal inflammation .

After Eunice Sanborn's death on January 31, 2011, Cooper was recognized as the oldest living person, but lost her Guinness World Records title briefly on May 18, 2011 to the Brazilian Maria Gomes Valentim, who was previously unknown to the public and a GWR earlier birth than Cooper could prove. After Gomes Valentim's death on June 21, 2011, Cooper regained the title of oldest living person to her own death. After the death of the Japanese Chiyono Hasegawa on December 2, 2011, she was also the last person alive to be born in 1896. At the time of her death, Cooper was in 7th place on the list of the oldest people, now she is 16th. The oldest living person was Dina Manfredini for 13 days after her death .
