description

Difference between similar species

With the two closely related Caucasian species, Betonica nivea and Betonica ossetica , Betonica abchasica shares the narrow lanceolate leaves, which are snow-white on the underside. The tiered arrangement of the little-flowered false whorls and large corollas is also striking. Overall, these three species are easily addressed and differ from one another in their flower color, size and hair ( indument ). For Betonica abchasica , felt star hairs on the underside of the leaf, the stem and purple flower crowns are characteristics in the taxonomic address. In Betonica ossetica , the yellow-white flowers and underside of the leaves with long white hairs are distinguishing features.

Vegetative characteristics

Betonica abchasica is a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 15 to 30 centimeters. It forms an underground, nodular rhizome as a survival organ. The stiff, upright, simple stem is covered with backward-facing long limb hairs, star hairs, and branched hairs ( trichomes ).

The leaves stand together in a basal rosette and are arranged opposite to one another on the stem. The numerous basal sheets are lanceolate with a length of 5 to 15 centimeters and a width of 1 to 2 centimeters. The stem leaves are similar to the basal leaves, but smaller, notched and serrated, green on top with scattered short hairs, white-tomentose on the underside with pressed limb hairs ; the lower leaves are petiolate, with a petiole the length of the leaf blade.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from June to July. The inflorescence consists of a cephalic partial inflorescence with two to three little-flowered pseudo-whorls in a pseudo-ear and a pseudo- whorl that is set down below . The bracts with a length of 9 to 10 millimeters lanceolate with a short tip, half the length of the calyx.

The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic with a double flower envelope . The sepals are fused roehrig-bell-shaped. The calyx teeth are linear-lanceolate and with a length of 5 to 6 millimeters half as long or shorter as the corolla tube. The corolla tube has simple limb hairs. The purple or pink crown is 1.2 times longer than the calyx. The obovate upper lip is shorter than the lower lip.

The dark brown partial fruits are egg-shaped with a length of about 4 millimeters and a width of 3 millimeters with a flattened upper end.

Occurrence

Betonica abchasica occurs in the Caucasus region in Georgia and Abkhazia . (there called Russian Буквица абхазская)

Betonica abchasica thrives on limestone in the West Caucasus in the alpine to subalpine altitudes at altitudes of 2200 to 2400 meters.

Taxonomy

The first description of Betonica nivea subsp. abchasica 1932 was carried out by NP Popov in Alexander Alfonsovich Grossheim in Flora Kavkaza , 3, p. 309. The type material is deposited in Tbilisi . A publication in 1936 as Betonica nivea subsp. abchasica was carried out by Joseph Friedrich Nicolaus Bornmüller in comments on the forms of Betonica nivea Steven (= Stachys discolor Bth.). In: Feddes Repertorium , Volume 40, 1936, pp. 370-374. The new combination to Betonica abchasica (NPPopov ex Grossh.) Chinth. was published by Leonida S. Chinthibidze . Another synonym for Betonica abchasica (NPPopov ex Grossh.) Chinth. is Stachys abchasica (NPPopov ex Grossh.) Czerep.
