Bettina Rühl

Bettina Rühl (born August 28, 1965 in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe ) is a German journalist . Rühl received several radio awards for its radio features about the political and social inner life of Africa . In 2020 she received the Federal Cross of Merit for all of her work in Africa .

Life

Bettina Rühl went to school at the Büttgen high school, studied art history, history and German studies in Cologne from 1985 and journalism at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz from 1994 . During her studies, from 1988, she began traveling to Africa, from where she posted reports for several ARD radio stations and Deutschlandfunk .

In 1996/97 she taught "Communication of cultural information in radio" at the Technical University of Darmstadt , and in 1997/98 at the University of Cologne "Journalism for Ethnologists". In 1992 she spent three months in Ivory Coast , in 2004/05 she taught radio journalism in Mali , in 2012 in Congo on behalf of the Evangelical Development Service on "Journalistic Ethics" and in Cameroon on "Civil Society and Media Work".

Bettina Rühl has been a freelance Africa correspondent since April 2011 . She writes for print media and radio stations and represents the ARD East Africa correspondent in Nairobi . Rühl's central content is the situations in crumbling states like Somalia and the Congo, war and conflict situations, trading conditions between North and South, illegal migration from Africa to Europe and development aid projects for migrants themselves.
