Beyond Belief is a Dutch Death Doom band from Kampen that was founded in 1986, disbanded in 1996 and has been active again since 2004.

history

The band was formed in 1986 and consisted of guitarist Robbie Woning, bassist Ronnie Van Der Wey, guitarist and singer AJ Van Drenth and drummer Jacko Westendorp. With Woning and Van Der Wey, two former Dead Head members were in the cast. With the bassist Artino Selles, the band recorded the demo Remind the Skull in 1990 at Heaven's Shores Studios in Kampen before it was released in 1991. In 1992 the group performed two exclusive songs for a sampler from DSFA Records . In the same year, the second demo was released Stranded , which was recorded in Franky's Recording Studios . The band also held national appearances along with Creepmime , Ancient Rites and Dead Head. The band then signed a contract with the German label Shark Records . The debut album Towards the Diabolical Experiment was recorded at T&T Studios in Gelsenkirchen with producer Tim Buktu before it was released in 1993. Outside of Europe the album was released by Nuclear Blast . In June of the same year, the bassist Selles left the band before the group returned to Franky's Recording Studios in 1994 with producer Berthus Westerhuis to record the second album Rave the Abyss , which was released in 1995. Wicliff Wolda joined the line-up as the new bass player. During the recording period, the group had performed across Europe. Outside of Europe the album was released again via Nuclear Blast. During the rest of 1995 the band played various gigs, including at the Stonehenge Festival . In 1996 guitarist Woning left the line-up and was replaced by Ronald Louwsma. Although the work on the EP The Terror had been announced, the band split up in 1996. After the dissolution, the members devoted themselves to other projects, such as Van Drenth The Monolith Deathcult joined. Among other things, Woning worked as a producer for Severe Torture . In 2003 Painiac Records released the compilation Dawn , which contained the demos Remind the Skull and Stranded and had an edition of 400 copies. In 2004 the band got together again and consisted of Van Drenth, the guitarist Martijn Moes, the bassist Wicliff Wolda and the drummer Arjen Hurkmans. The band made their first appearance on September 19, 2004 at the Doom Day III Festival in Rotterdam . In 2005 Woning returned as a guitarist and bassist Michiel Dekker and drummer Sjoerd Visch joined the line-up as new members. In April 2005 the group played at the German Doom Shall Rise Festival and again at the Stonehenge Festival.

style

According to Anthony van den Berg in a special edition of Metal Hammer , the band plays Doom Metal on Remind the Skull with riffs that would linger for a long time. According to Robert Müller from Metal Hammer , the band plays Doom Metal on Towards the Diabolical Experiment , but the vocals don't remind you of Ozzy Osbourne , but are guttural , which makes a comparison to bands Anathema and My Dying Bride . In the faster passages influences from Death Metal can be heard. According to Müller, the band on Rave the Abyss sound less interesting and innovative. On the album there is mostly normal Death Metal in the middle speed range. The only exceptions are the songs High on the Moon and Crushed Divine , which sound like a mixture of Crematory and Anathema.
