What is globalization (2004)

In the “clever, differentiated, and also understandable” answer to the title question, Teusch presents globalization as a multidimensional and multicausal , dynamic, dialectical and, in its consequences, ambivalent process. This resolution of borders occurs horizontally in the sense of permeability, for example, of geographical and political borders between states, vertically through the dismantling of hierarchies and democratization of power and domination relationships , technically in the sense of worldwide communication via the Internet, also in terms of traffic , but also ethically and politically through narrowing of room for maneuver. In addition, Teusch differentiates between an analytical globalization, which is caused by ambivalences, which makes clear explanations impossible. These processes began a long time ago, but have taken on a new quality in the present. Matthias Zimmer interprets this new quality in his reception of Teusch's theory as a consequence of the end of the East-West conflict.

The Disaster Society (2008)

The SZ review by Matthias Zimmer sees a main point of Teusch's reflective and perspective-broadening essay in the change of focus from the visible dimensions of the disasters to their causes and conditions. The "excessive striving for more security" creates new and ever greater uncertainties. The main problem is not what we can learn from disasters, but why the discourse about the disaster has not yet arrived at the underlying conditions. Teusch sees the reason for this in the fact that these conditions affect the fundamentals of the economic and social order, which we would have to put to the test. We would then have to admit “that technology is no longer an instrument for determinable purposes, but a large system that eludes effective control due to increasing complexity and the speed of change. And because technical categories have crept so far into our thinking that we have become part of the technical system. "

Jenny Marx (2011)

After Teusch wrote a radio feature on Jenny Marx in 2010, he published a biography a year later.

In her review in the TAZ , Tania Martini emphasizes that despite the works of Luise Dornemann and Count Schwerin von Krosigk, the apolitical image of women criticized by Heinrich Böll in 1960 has still not been overcome. Teusch, on the other hand, portrayed aspects of her character as a woman in his biography, which Friedrich Engels had already emphasized: "The decisiveness and political suffering with which Jenny Marx was part of the social democratic and socialist labor movement of the 19th century". Teusch shows how she participated, for example, in the Political Manifesto, attended meetings of the International Labor Organization and wrote bitingly ironic theater reviews. "Ulrich Teusch tells all of this without heroizing, does not hide the inconsistencies or breaks that the biographer can often only register."

Martin Hundt , the former reviewer of Luise Dornemann's Jenny biography, is still too much of a “housemaid” for Jenny at Teusch. “In fact, at the side of her husband, when she took part in the political movement, she often went to the limit of what was possible at the time.” Teusch's concern about forgetting made Hundt mention how much Jenny was present in the GDR. Hundt considers Teusch's presentation to be thoroughly researched, thought through with sympathy and psychological expertise and thus made tangible for today. In contrast to older interpretations, he finds empathetic, natural and humanly sympathetic explanations.

Not free from giddiness, radio feature (2013)

After an annotated compilation of quotes from well-known politicians, poets, artists and scientists who deal with the subject of lies, including Alexandre Koyré , Hans Eichel , Hannah Arendt , Claus Offe , Jonathan Swift , Blaise Pascal , John Mearsheimer , Christian Meier , Klaus Staeck and Franz Walter , the speakers for the feature come to the programmatic conclusion in Chapter 8 The Citizens' Obligation to Bring , based on György Konrád :

“In the political sphere there is no right to be gullible, but there is an obligation to be suspicious. Citizens are not mature if they agree to some kind of policy. They are of age when they are not deceived by anyone. "

The feature consists of 7 chapters that deal with the definition of the lie, the gray area of its morality and its political instrumentalisation.

Gap press (2016)

For Teusch, the title Lückenpresse expresses a critical allusion to the concept of the lie press , from which he distinguishes himself without foregoing criticism of the “mainstream media”. Gaps are normal, but must be compensated for through self-critical examination and pluralism of opinion. For him, the media debate is ultimately “a debate about the current state and future of democracy. It gets to the heart of the matter. ”Teusch speaks of a“ mainstream within the mainstream ”as a decisive core area which, in his opinion, has an informal orientation for other media, so that sometimes the impression of a“ consonance ”( Johannes Grotzky ) of the media arise. There is also a “mainstream outside the mainstream”. You can still find excellent journalism there. But this has a difficult position and is on the retreat. In his analysis of current cases such as the reporting on Brexit , the US election campaign in 2016 and the “Russia bashing”, Teusch comes to the conclusion that the representations followed narratives. In manipulative message design, the following are weighted, suppressed and evaluated:

  • Tendentious contextualization : Certain messages are embedded, for example, in a tendentious frame and given a spin .
  • Double standards : Issues are measured with double standards.
  • Suppression of essential information through selective presentation. Some messages are artificially played up, while others are only marginally reported and thus deliberately kept down.

According to Teusch, there is increasing “homogenization” ( Thomas Meyer ) and one-sided reporting in the media; More and more a closed, interest-led “ phalanx ” is emerging, which he finds questionable. He cites studies by the London School of Economics on reporting on Jeremy Corbyn , in which this development is classified as threatening democracy: the media mutated "from watchdog to attack dog". Teusch sees one reason for the narrowing and aggressive escalation of the published opinion in the fact that the public-law system has become closer to the state and the economy than originally intended.

The deficits are not accidental mistakes, but are structurally anchored, which means that these distortions take place without journalists proceeding with conscious intent. The fact that the citizens turned to alternative media as a result should therefore not be criticized across the board, but should be self-critically reflected on possible failures of the media. In his opinion, all media, including the public ones, are required to do better justice to their information mission. The citizen should, however, not trust a mainstream or an alternative medium unseen.

The war before the war (2019)

According to Maicke Mackerodt ( ORF ), the book with the subtitle How Propaganda Decides About Life and Death deals with ideologies justifying war and war-preparing propaganda in the broadest sense, which for Teusch also includes aggressive measures below the threshold of direct military force. He meticulously lists measures of pre-war propaganda for the younger present. "Well-founded and provocative, it proves that it is hardly possible to differentiate when military provocations end and when a war begins."

Prizes and awards

  • In 2013 he was awarded the Roman-Herzog Media Prize of 5000 euros for his radio feature Not without a head for heights - About Lies in Politics . The jury's justification: “Ulrich Teusch presents an exciting and dramatically well thought-out piece. Both the depth of the analysis and the variety of arguments are captivating and enable the listener to form an objective and independent opinion. "
