The  bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and the  United States of America  (USA)  lead primarily to cooperation in the  fields of energy and  security policy .

The US's energy policy interests in Azerbaijan lie in the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline (oil) and the South Caucasus pipeline (natural gas) as well as the implementation of gas pipeline projects in the southern corridor. Supporting Azerbaijan in the fight against terrorism and drug trafficking is also of great importance to the USA.

history

The first official meeting between representatives of Azerbaijan and the United States took place in 1919 after the end of the First World War as part of the Paris Peace Conference . At the meeting, the Azerbaijani delegation handed over a message to US President Woodrow Wilson . The communication contained six requests or demands:

  1. recognition of the independence of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan by the USA,
  2. the application of US President Woodrow Wilson's 14-point program to Azerbaijan, in particular the right of peoples to self-determination ,
  3. the participation of the Azerbaijani delegation in the Paris Peace Conference,
  4. ensuring that Azerbaijan is a member of the League of Nations ,
  5. US military support for Azerbaijan and
  6. the further development of diplomatic relations between the USA and Azerbaijan.

In January 1920, the independence of the Azerbaijani Democratic Republic from the United States was de facto recognized.

After Azerbaijan's involuntary annexation to the Soviet Union in April 1920, there were no direct bilateral diplomatic relations between the Azerbaijani SSR and the USA.

After Azerbaijan gained independence in 1991, diplomatic relations between the USA and Azerbaijan were reactivated in 1992. The then US President George HW Bush announced on December 25, 1991 that the USA recognized the restoration of Azerbaijan's independence. In March 1992, Azerbaijan opened a diplomatic mission in Washington, DC ; the US State Department opened a representative office in Baku in November 1992 .

Economic Cooperation

The US and Azerbaijan are important trading partners and have a bilateral investment treaty. A US-Azerbaijani economic partnership commission serves to develop bilateral cooperation in the field of trade and investment. Energy policy cooperation is in the interests of both countries.
