The relations between the Holy See and Iran designate the diplomatic relations between the Holy See and the Islamic Republic of Iran . These are states in which the Roman Catholic Church and Shiite Islam are state religions.

history

First relations began during the reign of Shah Abbas I when the Persian ambassador visited the Pope . 1954, during the pontificate of Pope Pius XII. , began the formal relationships that were maintained after the Islamic Revolution . Iran has accredited the second largest diplomatic corps to the Holy See after the Dominican Republic .

In 1979 Pope John Paul II sent an envoy to find a solution to the hostage situation in Tehran . In 2008 relations were improved following a remark made by Mahmoud Ahmadineschad at a meeting with the Apostolic Nuncio of Iran, Archbishop Jean-Paul Gobel .

On October 7, 2010, then President Ahmadinejad said to Pope Benedict XVI. that he would like to work more closely with the Vatican on issues of religious tolerance and family separation. On November 3, 2010, the Pope sent the Iranian President a letter stating that the establishment of a bilateral commission to solve the problems of the Roman Catholic Church in Iran would be desirable.
