Bhitargaon or Bhitarganv ( Hindi भीतर गाँव ) is a village in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh with a population of around 5,400 . In the Gupta period (around 550), Bhitargaon was an important place.
location
Bhitargaon is located in the largely natural stone-free landscape of the Doab at an altitude of almost 130 m above sea level. d. M. approx. 32 km (driving distance) south of the district capital Kanpur . The climate is warm; Rain falls mainly in the monsoon months June to October.
population
The predominantly Hindi- speaking inhabitants of the place are predominantly Hindus ; other religions hardly play a role among the rural population of India. The female population is around 16% less than the male.
economy
Agriculture plays the main role in the villages of fertile Doab; sometimes chickens and / or dairy cows are also kept. In the village there are small traders, craftsmen and day laborers.
history
Already in the Gupta period, i. H. in the 5th / 6th In the 19th century, the fertile area was of enormous economic importance. The temple, which was probably built in the 6th century, is made entirely of bricks and decorated with figural terracotta reliefs. It was poorly restored at the beginning of the 20th century and extensively restored at the beginning of the 21st century and is now under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India .
Attractions
The Gupta Temple , the only place of interest, stands on an approximately 1 m high platform ( jagati ) that protects the structure from rainwater. The actual cella ( garbhagriha ) is raised again by several steps; the cult image or the lingam is no longer there. In the outer wall are several niches framed by small pillars with high quality, but almost destroyed figure reliefs made of terracotta, which show themes from both the Vishnuit and Shivaite legends, so that a consistent attribution of the temple can no longer be made. A second one runs above the first rim of niches; Above it rises a tower structure, stepped back several times, with further niches and a round arch decoration, which is rare in India .
