The library and lecture hall building of the University of Mannheim , a building of the University of Mannheim , is a work by Gottfried Böhm in the postmodern style and a cultural monument .

Geographical location

The building is located in the A3 square, opposite Mannheim Palace , near the Jesuit Church and the Bretzenheim Palace . The building takes the historical environment into account by taking up its building lines , eaves height , structure and color.

history

The construction contract was put out to tender in 1986 by the state of Baden-Württemberg . Eight construction companies were asked to submit an offer. You should also submit a draft by an architect for each. The construction task comprised a library with a focus on the magazine function and a large auditorium with a capacity of 700 people ( auditorium maximum ). The first prize went to Züblin , Stuttgart, and Gottfried Böhm. The contract was awarded in November 1986 and the building was completed in October 1988.

A comprehensive renovation of the lecture hall took place from 2012 to 2013. The building also received a new air conditioning system, the so-called Bauer ventilation.

Facade detail

Was carried a steel skeleton with concrete - finished parts . Only the stairwells were made of in-situ concrete .

The building has four floors. The long rectangular floor plan is divided into three naves , recognizable from the outside by their own hipped roof . The middle one is a glass roof that ensures most of the interior exposure. The outer walls are mainly structured with wall panels made of concrete and only ever have one centrally placed, small oculus per wall panel . The oculi are framed by cast glass blocks . This wall design is interrupted on the front side in front of the central nave: Here the facade consists of printed aluminum plates with the title page of the Mannheim Generalanzeiger dated July 24, 1907, the founding date of the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences, the predecessor of the university.

The most striking feature of the exterior design are the "spherical trees", large, elevated spheres made of red-colored concrete that make them look like they are made of red sandstone . They are located on the ground floor along the long sides of the building, one between two pillars: 10 along the street front and another on the opposite side, because the building is mostly adjacent to development there. The spheres have a sculptural design and symbolize the history of human settlement. Gottfried Böhm created 10 hemispheres. Two hemispheres, each with the same motif, are put together to form a tree. The content is architectural motifs.

The building is accessed via a vestibule with a four-flight, centrally and freely placed staircase. Offices are arranged around the staircase on the first floor. The lecture hall is located on the ground floor and in the basement. The three floors above serve the library. The central nave covers the total height of these three floors. The reading areas are located here. The side aisles serve as a book store.

In terms of construction time, the building was criticized as "too modern" and incompatible with the baroque buildings in the area, which were reconstructed after the Second World War .

Since 2016 the building has been a cultural monument according to the Monument Protection Act of the State of Baden-Württemberg , for artistic and scientific reasons. This makes it one of the youngest listed buildings in Baden-Württemberg.
