The Bidasoa ( Spanish and Basque spelling) or Bidassoa ( French ) is a river in northern Spain . It rises east of the place Errazu in the municipality of Baztan in Navarra and flows into the Bay of Txingudi in the Atlantic Ocean (Bay of Biscay ) at Hondarribia ( Gipuzkoa ). Its length is 66 km. From the source of the river to the village of Oronoz-Mugairi, it is known as Río Baztán , from there as Bidasoa . The last 10 km of the river represent the state border between Spain and France .
The Pheasant Island ( Isla de los Faisanes in Spanish , Île des Faisans in French ) in the lower part of the river served as a neutral place of negotiation between Spain and France: the Peace of the Pyrenees was concluded there in 1659 . The approximately 2000 m² pheasant island is the smallest condominium in the world and is administered six months a year by France and Spain.
The Bidasoa and its landscapes served the painters of the Bidasoa Painting School as the primary source of inspiration for their landscape painting.
