history

The Big Valley was settled relatively late because the local Indians were considered aggressive. After a village was formed with the nearby Adin in the 1860s, Theodore Pleisch settled in the area of today's Bieber, who claimed the land for himself in May 1873 under the Homestead Act . The area was then known as Chalk Ford after a ford through the Pit River. In the years that followed, more settlers built huts in the countryside.

The place is not named after Justin Bieber , but after a Nathan Bieber . He came to the small settlement on the Pit River in 1877 and started a business with a relative. In 1879 Nathan Bieber became the manager of the post office and the place officially changed its name to Bieber. On December 10, 1883, the settlement achieved the status of a town. In 1888 Bieber already had between 250 and 300 inhabitants and needed a prison the following year.
