Big Sandy is a city in Upshur County in the US state of Texas in the United States of America . Big Sandy is the only dry city in Upshur Counties, and residents get alcoholic beverages in the adjacent Smith and Wood Counties.

The city is located in northeast Texas, north of Big Sandy Creek , at the intersection of US Highway 80 and Texas State Route 155 and Farm Road 2911, in the southeast corner of Upshur County, is 80 km to the east from Louisiana and has a total area of 4.3 km 2 , of which 0.1 km 2 is water. The distance to Dallas in the west is approx. 190 km.
history
The first small settlement on the site of today's town was formed around 1870. In 1873 the Texas and Pacific Railway moved its rails in this area and in 1880 the Tyler Tap , also a railroad company, moved its rails along Big Sandy Creek. A station named Big Sandy Switch was set up at the intersection of both railroad lines . A small settlement developed from this in the following years, which later became the small town of Big Sandy.
The first post office and two general stores were opened in 1875 and by 1885 the settlement already had around 500 residents. More hotels and restaurants opened by 1900. By 1915 Big Sandy had two banks, a weekly newspaper, and a cotton market. On June 21, 1926, Big Sandy was registered as a city and the population grew to 850 inhabitants by 1933.
Demographic data
According to the 2000 census, 1,288 people lived here in 532 households and 342 families. The population density was 303.2 people per km 2 (786.8 / mi²). The racial the population is made up of 81.75% White, 12.89% African American, 0.39% Native American, 1.16% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 2.95% other ethnic groups. About 0.85% are of two or more races, and 3.49% of the population are Spanish or Latin American.
Of the 532 households, 32.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 47.4% of these were married couples living together. 13.2% were single mothers and 35.7% were non-families. 34.4% of all households were single households and there were people living in 17.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 3.11.
28.0% of the population were under 18 years old, 8.7% 18 to 24, 26.6% 25 to 44, 19.3% 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 86.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 78.5 men.
The median income for a household in the 25,284 USD , and the median income for a family 34,107 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,083 versus $ 21,071 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,989. 17.8% of the population and 16.4% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 24.9% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 15.6% were 65 or older.
