Bijlia is a plant kind from the family of aizoaceae (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus honors Deborah Susanna von der Bijl, whocorrespondedwith Nicholas Edward Brown and sent him the plants she had collected.

description

The plants of the genus Bijlia grow compactly with three to five branches, each bearing two to three pairs of leaves. The bare, whitish leaves are hunched to bumpy. Your epidermis is smooth and contains a very thick layer of crystal sand, around 10 micrometers thick, in the outer wall .

One to three short-stalked or sessile flowers are formed on a plant body. There are bracts . There are five sepals , the tips of which are more or less the same. The egg yolk petals are arranged in two circles. Thread-like staminodes are missing. The stamens form an upright bundle. The eight-compartment capsule fruits sit deep between the leaves. The seeds are light brown and 0.75 to 0.86 millimeters long and 0.5 to 0.6 millimeters wide.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Bijlia is common in the area around the small town of Prince Albert in the South African province of Western Cape . The plants grow in flat areas in the grus of weathered dolerites and quartzites .

It was first described in 1928 by Nicholas Edward Brown . According to Heidrun Hartmann (* 1942) the genus Bijlia includes the following two species:
