Wayside shrine on Glosberger Strasse in Gundelsdorf

The shrine on the road connecting the two districts Gundelsdorf and Glos mountain of the Upper Franconian town of Kronach is under monument protection standing small monument , which was built 1768th The reason for the establishment is the death of a man from the hamlet of Rottelsdorf to the west of Gundelsdorf, who is said to have died here after visiting the church in Glosberg.

The sandstone wayside shrine stands on a concave-convex profiled, four-sided base , on the east side of which the now weathered inscription “In honor of God has Lorentz Geyger… Anno 1767” was carved. The base bears a subdivided pillar shaft decorated with bands , on which there is a four-sided attachment with retracted round arches . The top is crowned by a stone ball with an iron double bar cross.

On the four sides of the essay there are reliefs with depictions of the Archangel Michael , St. Lawrence , the Coronation of Mary and the Glosberg Mother of God . A statue of the Virgin Mary in the neighboring pilgrimage site is said to have wept bloody tears several times in 1727, which is why this motif can be found on numerous wayside shrines in the Franconian Forest .

In 1977 the local connecting road between the two then still independent municipalities of Gundelsdorf and Glosberg was expanded. In the previous planning, however, it was neglected to involve the responsible district home nurse, so that the location of the wayside shrine was unexpectedly in the middle of the planned route. While the construction work for the street was already in progress, the wayside shrine was dismantled into its individual parts under time pressure and brought to the studio of the Kronach sculptor Heinrich Schreiber. After a renovation of the monument, which had become necessary due to its dismantling, the Marter was first exhibited at the Upper Franconia Exhibition in Kronach in 1978 and then placed back in its original location next to the newly built road.
