Wayside shrine at the foot of the St. Kunigunde bastion

The shrine at the entrance to the fortress Rosenberg , in the hairpin at the foot of Bastion St. Cunegonde, is under monument protection standing small monument in the Upper Franconian town of Kronach .

description

The torture that occurred in the 18th century was originally located around 50 meters further southeast at the upper end of the fortress road; it was moved to its current location in 1936 on the occasion of the erection of the war memorial for those killed in the First World War . The sandstone column was rotated 90 degrees so that the main page, which once looked south towards the city, now faces west.

The wayside shrine rests on a square base plate, which is marked on its west side with the year 1672 and probably comes from an older torture. The concave-convex profiled base also bears the inscription "Deo haec StatVa a PhILIppo Ernesto De ReDeWIz hIC posIta fVIt" (God is this statue by Philipp Ernst von Redwitz) on the west side, which contains the year 1666 as a chronogram . The divided pillar shaft rises above the base , the four sides of which are decorated with tendrils. In the lower part of the west side the coat of arms of the Barons von Redwitz can be seen .

The top, flanked by volutes , is closed by a retracted round arch on which there is an ornate and gilded iron cross. The base and the arch are decorated with friezes . On the west side of the top there is a relief of the Archangel Michael , the east side shows a representation of the Glosberg Mother of God . A statue of the Virgin Mary in the pilgrimage site to the north, which is now a district of Kronach, is said to have wept bloody tears several times in 1727, which is why this motif can be found on numerous wayside shrines in the Franconian Forest .

Philipp Ernst von Redwitz named in the inscription on the base was in command of the Rosenberg Fortress from 1774 to 1787 . He probably had the wayside shrine built as a replacement for an earlier torture at the original location of the monument, which is mentioned in the Cronacher Amtsurbar of 1507. Possibly the year contained as a chronogram in the inscription thus refers to the year in which this predecessor passed away.

Remarks

  1. The year 1666 is given by Graf / Schreiber. It results from adding the Roman numerals , which are highlighted in the inscription by capitalization. The year 1676 is also conceivable, if the letter W, which is also highlighted in capital letters, is interpreted as V + V = 10, which is possible with chronograms.
