Bill Green (soccer player)

William "Bill" Green (born December 22, 1950 in Newcastle upon Tyne , † August 21, 2017 in Sheffield ) was an English football player and coach.

Athletic career

Green made his adult debut for Hartlepool United in 1969 when the club was relegated to the fourth division . After 130 league games, the defender moved in 1973 to the then second division club Carlisle United , with whom he rose to the First Division at the end of his first season . After the direct relegation to the Second Division , he played another season for the club before moving back to West Ham United in the top division. In 1978 he joined Peterborough United for one season in the Third Division before running for four years for Chesterfield FC . In 1980 he was elected to the PFA Team of the Year for the third division. After relegation to fourth division, he left the club in 1983 to end his career with league rivals Doncaster Rovers .

In October 1984 Green began his coaching career when Frank Barlow brought him to Scunthorpe United as assistant coach . After a coach change in 1987 he was also part of the coaching staff under the new head coach Mick Buxton before he inherited Buxton in February 1991. In 1991 and 1992 he led the fourth division into the promotion play-offs, but the team missed promotion. He was released in early 1993. Between 1994 and 1996 he was in charge of Buxton FC in non-league football . In 2002 he returned briefly to the coaching business as an interim coach at Sheffield Wednesday before earning his money as a talent scout for Europe at Wigan Athletic and later Derby County . Before his death at the age of 66 years he was at Southampton FC conductive in the recruitment business.
