Bill Taylor (racing driver)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William "Bill" Taylor (born December 24, 1918 in Oklahoma , † May 5, 2004 Auburndale , Florida ) was an American racing driver .

After the Second World War , which he spent in Okinawa , Taylor bought a midget car and started racing. In 1948 he finished second to Troy Ruttman in the Midget class while winning the West Coast Stock Car Racing Association championship.

In 1949 he tried to qualify for the first time for the Indianapolis 500 . He drove a Rounds Rocket , a vehicle that was equipped with a rear engine, which was revolutionary at the time. However, it was not enough to qualify. In 1952 he was also unable to qualify because it with a Lesovsky - Offenhauser had an accident. In 1953 it was not enough for the race either.

After his career he was first racing director at Mobil Oil , then head of the USAC - Stock Car program and finally, together with his wife, representative for Simpson racing equipment at NASCAR .
