Bill White (politician)
William Howard "Bill" White (born June 16, 1954 in San Antonio , Texas ) is an American politician . He was Mayor of Houston from January 2004 to January 2010 .
White studied law at the University of Texas at Austin and later worked for the law firm Susman Godfrey LLP , where he later became a partner. After 14 years of working in this firm White was founded in 1993 as the successor to Linda Stuntz Deputy Energy Minister ( Deputy Secretary of Energy ) in the government Clinton . Two years later, he resigned to go into the private sector . During this time, White also held the office of chairman of the Democratic Party in Texas.
After Lee P. Brown was not allowed to run in the mayoral elections in 2003 (he had already completed three terms), White ran as a moderate Democrat and was able to prevail against Republican Orlando Sanchez. In 2005 White was re-elected with 91%. In 2007 he was re-elected. At the end of his third term of office , he left office. Annise Parker was elected as his successor in December 2009 .
White ran for governor of Texas in November 2010 . However, he was clearly defeated by the Republican incumbent Rick Perry with 42:55 percent of the vote. White rejected speculation that he would run for the seat of the no longer-running Republican Kay Bailey Hutchison in the US Senate in 2012 .
