William "Bill" Whitehouse (born April 1, 1909 in London , England , † July 14, 1957 in Reims , France ) was a British automobile racing driver .

Career

Bill Whitehouse was one of the most successful drivers on the young British 500cc Formula 3 scene in the early 1950s. In addition to established drivers such as Peter Whitehead and Tony Rolt , young drivers such as Stirling Moss , Peter Collins and Mike Hawthorn drove these popular races.

Until 1954 Whitehouse, who was called “Big Bill” by his friends, drove Formula 3 races. Interrupted only by a few excursions into Formula 2 and an appearance in Formula 1 . At the British Grand Prix he started the race with his private Connaught Type A - Lea-Francis from 19th place on the grid (after all, 31 vehicles were at the start). However, the Grand Prix ended prematurely for him after a petrol pump defect.

Whitehouse resigned in 1956 following an accident. In 1957 he suddenly came back. He drove the Gran Premio di Siracusa with a Cooper Formula 2, which he had bought shortly before. In training for the Formula 2 race in Reims , he had an engine failure, whereupon the Cooper works team loaned him a works car for the actual race. On race day he had a serious accident after a puncture on the Thillois track. The car went up in flames and Whitehouse died of serious injuries.
