The Billwerder Industriebahn is a railway system in Hamburg . The industrial trunk line is used for freight traffic in the industrial area of the districts of Billbrook and Rothenburgsort .

Operating company

The Billwerder Industriebahn was built by Billwärder Industriebahn AG . This railway company was founded on July 10, 1905 to equip the growing industrial area with railways . The railway systems were sold to the Bergedorf-Geesthachter Railway (BGE) on October 21, 1921 and taken over by the Altona-Kaltenkirchen-Neumünster Railway (AKN) on January 1, 1956 , which continues to operate them to this day.

Route network

Former buildings of Billbrook train station

The trunk line that no longer exists today led from Tiefstack station to Billbrook station at the junction of Moorfleeter Strasse and Berzeliusstrasse and was 2.5 kilometers long. At times the railway had a large network with branch lines that led through Billbrook and also towards Billwerder Ausschlag in the north of the Rothenburgsort district. Some of the tracks run parallel to the streets in the industrial area, often on both sides of the street until the 1990s. This should offer industrial companies an optimal siding.

To the north of the Tiefstack S-Bahn stop is a marshalling yard and signal box , and to the east of the signal box is the depot. In between there used to be a passenger platform, which was accessible via a staircase from the extended underpass to the S-Bahn platform. This is still preserved today. A short transfer route leads from Tiefstack to the west, which runs parallel to the freight bypass line coming from the north into the eastern head of the remains of the former Rothenburgsort marshalling yard of the state railway.

The Schibli tunnel is also part of the route network .

history

On August 1, 1907, the Billwerder industrial railway began freight traffic on the 4.2 kilometer route Rothenburgsort - Tiefstack - Billbrook - Schiffbek-Kirchsteinbek (today: Billstedt ). From December 17, 1907 to March 15, 1952, the passenger trains of the Südstormarnsche Kreisbahn to Trittau also used the route from Tiefstack.

Until the cessation of passenger traffic on the Südstormarnsche Kreisbahn in 1952, there was a connection in Billbrook to the Hamburg march train via Zollenspieker to Geesthacht . At times there were continuous trains running from Billbrook on the tracks of the industrial railway to Tiefstack station. The Marschbahn was then dismantled with the exception of a remnant piece east of the Billbrooker station, which leads to Glinde in the Stormarn district and is still part of the industrial railway network today.

The industrial railway's own track network also became shorter and shorter over time. Many companies have switched their transports to trucks. This trend was supported by the Deutsche Bundesbahn , which had massively shifted the transport of general cargo to the road since the end of the 1980s . Countless freight stations across Germany have been closed by the railway. Individual wagon loads, as they often occur in industrial areas, are only reluctantly transported if they fall below a certain amount.

As a result of the declining transport volumes, the AKN has removed some sidings. Some sections of the Billwerder industrial railway were even completely shut down and dismantled, for example the line over the yellow bridge to the industrial area on Columbusstrasse.

Even the main route from Tiefstack to Billbrook was not spared from changes. The track between Wöhlerstrasse and Moorfleeter Strasse was interrupted in 2001 and the route was sold to an industrial company. Since then, Billbrook station can no longer be reached directly via the original route. However, there is an additional connection via tracks south of the Tide Canal along the Pinkertweg road , which connect to the rest of the march line on the eastern edge of Billbrooks. The trains now reach Billbrook station from the eastern side and have to turn their heads to continue to Glinde. The level crossing over Moorfleeter Straße on the west side of the station no longer exists.

Between the industrial line at Tiefstack station and the S-Bahn tracks, the Hamburg-Tiefstack workshop was built for Nordbahn Eisenbahngesellschaft , a 50 percent subsidiary of AKN, in 2013-2014 . In these 15 are low-floor - EMUs of type FLIRT waited with which the Northern Railway since the timetable change in December 2014 traffic on the regional railway lines RB 61 ( Itzehoe - Hamburg main station ) and RB 71 ( Wrist - Hamburg-Altona performs).
