The Südstormarnsche Kreisbahn was a small railway in the southern part of the Schleswig-Holstein district of Stormarn and in eastern Hamburg .

The portion of the which is still in operation Zugleitbetrieb operated branch line of Tiefstack from up to the trapezoidal panel in kilometers 4,798 of the AKN railway operated, the remaining portion over the border Hamburg / Schleswig-Holstein at kilometer 8,343 to route end in kilometers 12.370 from the BMHD Braaker Mühle Handels- und Dienstleistungsgesellschaft mbH, which, however, has entrusted the AKN with the operational management. There is a connection to the PAB Koops (Kieswerk Glinde Schweder GmbH & Co. KG) at Glinde station.

Route description

The 33.67 km long, single-track, non-electrified line runs from Billbrook station on the Billwerder industrial railway via Billstedt to Glinde and continues via Siek to Trittau station on the Bad Oldesloe - Trittau - Schwarzenbek state railway . Between Billstedt and Havighorst the route overcomes the ascent from the valley of Bille for Geesthang north of the Elbe. This section is one of the steepest railway lines in northern Germany.

In Billbrook there was a connection to the Hamburg Marschbahn as well as continuous passenger traffic via Billbrook to Tiefstack station on the Berliner Tor station - Billwerder-Moorfleet station of the Hamburg S-Bahn .

history

The line was opened on December 17, 1907. The railway was owned by the Stormarn district .

While passenger traffic developed satisfactorily, especially on weekends, the volume of goods on the route was moderate from the start. Larger transport services for freight were during the annual beet campaign and in the construction of the highway Hamburg Lübeck , later A1 recorded.

The railway company tried to streamline operations. For example, two railcars from Linke-Hofmann-Lauchhammer and AEG were purchased in 1924/25 . Nevertheless, closure was discussed as early as the 1930s and decided by the district council in 1933. The settlement of armaments factories was initially able to avert the closure.

Since 1928, the operating company of the Südstormarnsche Kreisbahn has been operating as the transport company of the Stormarn district and offered a parallel bus service from Hamburg Central Station to Trittau.

Passenger traffic ceased on March 15, 1952 on the entire route. The track systems between Glinde and Trittau were dismantled in the following years; Today there is a cycle path on the route. The section from Billbrook to Glinde with the connection to the local military equipment office and industrial area was retained for freight traffic. Most of the station buildings still exist today along the entire route.

The transport companies of the Stormarn district were taken over on September 1, 1953 by the Bergedorf-Geesthachter Railway (BGE). On April 7, 1954, this company became the Hamburg-Holstein Transport Company (VHH). The railway systems and operations on the remaining railway lines were taken over at the beginning of 1956 by the Altona-Kaltenkirchen-Neumünster (AKN) railway company , which still operates goods traffic there today.

On October 18, 2005, the AKN advertised the route for closure in the Federal Gazette. There were four applications for this tender. On July 20, 2006, the AKN ended this tender and announced that it would continue to operate the route on its own responsibility. Thus, dismantling was initially averted. However, there are movements in Glinde for whom the remaining distance is a thorn in their side. The political parties assess the value of the route differently. While the CDU is more in favor of the dismantling, the SPD in its party program has initially spoken out in favor of preservation, combined with feasibility studies for use and connection to the Hamburg subway network . The dismantling of the tracks in the former depot area, which has now taken place, is also viewed rather critically by the SPD.

On December 17th, 2007 the Friends of the Südstormarnsche Kreisbahn invited people to a ceremony for the 100th anniversary of the Kreisbahn. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary, the district archive in Bad Oldesloe presented an archive exhibition.

The special trips on 21./22. June 2008 on the remainder of the route showed the great interest in the railway due to the public participation. Critical voices about the planned demolition were also loud.

During a severe storm on May 10, 2018, the route in the section between Havighorst and Glinde was washed down several times. In the Domshorst area, the entire embankment was removed by the water from a local heavy rain event. The storm damage on the route had already been completely repaired on May 31, 2018 and the first train was able to return to Glinde that afternoon.
