William "Billy" Grassam (born November 20, 1878 or 1880 in Larbert , Falkirk , † 1943 ) was a Scottish football player who played mainly in England during his career.
Career
Grassam was one of the outstanding players in Glasgow amateur football shortly before the turn of the century and came to a use for a selection team Glasgow against Lanarkshire as well as for a Scottish amateur selection against Ireland. About Redcliffe Thistle and Maryhill he came to the English professional club Burslem Port Vale in 1899 in the Football League Second Division . After one season he moved to the London club West Ham United , for which he played three seasons in the Southern Football League and was the team's top scorer in all three seasons. Here, the Scots get four hits and becoming the first hat-trick in the history of West Ham's already on his league debut on September 1, 1900 against Gravesend, in December 1900, he also became the first player of the club, the three hits in a game of the FA Cup scoring . In 1902 he took over the captaincy's armband after Roddy McEachrane had left Woolwich Arsenal .
In May 1903 Grassam returned briefly to Scotland and completed two league games for Celtic Glasgow , but already switched back to English football to Manchester United in September , with whom the striker narrowly missed promotion to the First Division twice as third in the table . In 1905 Grassam left Manchester and, after a brief stint at Leyton FC, played again at West Ham United at the end of 1905, without being able to match the hit rate of his first stay and was eventually ousted by the aspiring Danny Shea . On Boxing Day 1908 he played his last league game, in February 1909 he was in the FA Cup against Newcastle United for West Ham for the last time. He then let his career end at Brentford FC .
