With Bimota Tesi a series of is sports motorcycles from the Italian manufacturer Bimota referred, characterized by an extraordinary hub-center steering distinguished. Instead of the usual telescopic fork , the Bimota Tesi, which has been manufactured since 1990, has a stub axle steering , and Ducati supplies the engines for the series .

History and technology

As early as 1982, the development department of Bimota began under Frederico Martini with the construction of an alternative front wheel guide for the motorcycle. In 1985 driving tests were carried out with a racing machine called the "Bimota Tesi". The steering movement was transmitted hydraulically via two pressure lines, the system pressure was 50 bar. The hydraulic steering was not fully developed, and serial production was out of the question. The glued aluminum frame, which weighed only 5.9 kg due to the so-called honeycomb construction, was also innovative .

Tesi 1D (1990-1994)

In 1990 Bimota presented the Tesi 1D , a series model with wheel hub steering for the first time , for which Giuseppe Morri, co-founder of Bimota, held a patent. The steering movements are transmitted purely mechanically via a complex lever system with two push rods. In the middle of the wheel axle there is a steering bearing journal around which the wheel rotates. The steering movement is initiated with a lever that acts on the wheel carrier. Thanks to the water-cooled motor of the Ducati 851 , which delivered 102 hp at 9000 rpm, the classic frame was no longer required. As in the racing version, two milled aluminum plates held the engine and the front and rear swing arms. Despite the high price of 52,000  German marks 127 copies were sold.

Tesi 1D / SR (1991–1992)

The successor model, the Tesi 1D / SR, received the water-cooled Ducati engine with 904 cm³ displacement and 113 hp at 8500 rpm. For the price of 61,420  D-Marks , 164 buyers received a Tesi 1D that was identical except for the engine with a different paintwork.

Tesi 1D / ES (1993)

The optically revised Tesi 1D got a different fairing, composite wheels and a modified rear swing arm. 50 copies were produced and offered at the “incredible price” of 63,700 German  marks .

Tesi 1D / EF (1994)

The last series of the Tesi 1D was only delivered in black. Technically, the EF was only slightly changed compared to the previous model, the engine now developed 117 hp at 8500 rpm. 25 of these “absolute rarities” are said to have been sold.

When comparing the systems of different front suspensions , the magazine Motorrad also tested a Bimota Tesi 1D with wheel hub steering. The wheel hub steering had structural advantages compared to the telescopic fork in terms of braking compensation and immersion during braking. The low steering angle, unsatisfactory driving stability at high speeds and a "completely unsuccessful coordination of the suspension and damping" were criticized.

Wheel hub steering Telescopic fork
Brake pitch compensation 58% - 6%
Immersion at 8 m / s² deceleration 14.5 mm 45.5 mm
Steering angle 19 ° 37 °
Unsprung mass (front wheel) 22.6 kg 21.5 kg

“The Bimota Tesi has never been much more than an eye-catcher. It was simply too expensive for that. "

- Michael Pfeiffer.

After the manufacturer Bimota went bankrupt in 2000 , the company Vyrus, based near Rimini , took over the patents on the wheel hub steering of the Bimota Tesi. In 2003 the first Vyrus 984 C³ 2V was delivered, which should introduce a special style.

Tesi 2D (2005-2006)

After the resumption of production by Bimota, the Tesi 2D, an uncovered version, was presented, which used an air-cooled 992 cm³ engine from Ducati with 86 hp at 7750 rpm. With a dry weight of 149 kg and a price of 39,800 euros, the Tesi 2D was exclusive in every respect; this was also evident in the 25 copies that were just sold. The press did not spare criticism of the naked, "completely removed" Tesi 2D:

"If wealthy men bought a stable construction kit and included three years of tinkering, the result would be similar to the Tesi, guaranteed."

Tesi 3D (2007–)

The Tesi 3D with the air-cooled 1078 cm³ engine from the Ducati Monster series with 98 hp at 7500 rpm and an empty weight of 179 kg differed not only visually from the Tesi 2D, but also in terms of price, which was less than 30,000 euros was lowered. The trailing arm of the wheel hub steering now consisted of a tubular rocker arm. The slightly decoupled driving experience of the wheel hub steering was compared with that of the Telelever front wheel guidance. The steering head angle , in the Tesi 3D 72-64 °, the follow-up be adjusted individually between 80 and 120 mm. The first series consisted of 25 built motorcycles, Bimota regularly presents further developments, u. a. 2013 the Tesi 3D Naked .

"It remains to be seen whether this type of control will prevail, because there are no obvious advantages [...]."
