Birdemic: Shock and Terror ( Birdemic for short ) is an American animal horror film from 2010. Director , screenwriter and producer is James Nguyen . In a press release the film is referred to as a "romantic thriller ".

action

A small town in the San Francisco Bay Area is hit by sudden, inexplicable attacks from birds for a few days. The residents have to fend off these attacks.

background

The inspiration for the film served the birds of Alfred Hitchcock . A touted cameo of Hitchcock's leading actress, Tippi Hedren , is actually an excerpt from an appearance by Hedren in an earlier Nguyen film, Julie and Jack , which appears on television in Birdemic . The film was a budget of only 10,000 US dollars rotated.

In January 2009, James Nguyen traveled to the Sundance Film Festival in Park City , Utah to promote his film on his own using a van that was decorated with stuffed birds with the incorrect address BIDEMIC.COM and WHY DID THE EAGLES AND VULTURES ATTACKED? wore. He distributed leaflets to passers-by and rented a local movie theater to show the film. The trailer for the film was shown on July 30, 2009 in the program Attack of the Show! of the American television channel G4 .

The first screening of the film took place in Los Angeles on February 27, 2010 . The film was shown at the Silent Movie Theater with support from the horror website Bloody Disgusting . The event was moderated by comedians Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim . This was followed by a performance in the presence of actors and the film staff at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in the Texan capital Austin on March 2nd and other solo performances. The film was acquired by the production and distribution company Severin Films , which was planning further screenings.

Nguyen's production company Moviehead Pictures offered the film on April 3, 2009, produced on demand on DVD . After Severin Films acquired the rights , a special edition on DVD and Blu-ray Disc was released in February 2011 .

criticism

The film caused a stir because of its unusually poor quality. Criticized were, among other things, wooden-looking actors, bad dialogues, unprofessional camera work, nonsensical plot and especially the special effects , which consist entirely of poorly implemented CGI eagles and eggs that perform awkward maneuvers (non-animated sprites in the background rotate 360 ° in flight) , Spit acid and explode on hitting the ground. Birdemic is variously referred to as the "worst movie ever" that could replace Ed Wood's Plan 9 from space . In 2014 it was listed as the second worst film of all time in the IMDb . As of January 2018, it was relegated to tenth place on this list.

continuation

On April 10, 2013, the sequel, Birdemic 2: The Resurrection , premiered in New York. It could not convince the IMDb users either and in January 2015 it was number 13 of the worst films of all time. James Nguyen took over the direction again and the main characters of the first part can be seen in their roles again.
