Joe Zawinuls Birdland in Vienna was a jazz club that existed between 2004 and 2008.

Joe Zawinul's band Weather Report 1977 published a song on the album Heavy Weather named Birdland as a tribute to the New York jazz club Birdland . In an interview, Zawinul said about Birdland in New York:

“The best jazz musicians and bands played in Birdland. Duke Ellington and the Count Basie Orchestra , Miles Davis , Dizzy Gillespie , Cannonball , Ella Fitzgerald , Dinah Washington : this club had it all. For me it was the most important place in my life. "

Zawinul opened Joe Zawinul's Birdland at the Hilton Hotel in Vienna in 2004 ; the club accommodated 200 guests and received no subsidies. Nevertheless, it was possible to bring big names to Birdland for concerts : The Zawinul Syndicate ( Vienna Nights, 2005) played there as well as the WDR Big Band Cologne ( Brown Street, 2005), Puschnig & Sharrock , Toots Thielemans and Randy Crawford . One year after it opened, Zawinul founded the BirdJAM label , which was intended exclusively for the publication of live recordings from Birdland in Vienna. Since opening, the club has repeatedly run into financial difficulties. On August 11, 2008 bankruptcy proceedings were opened. Since the talks with possible investors remained fruitless, the jazz club was closed.
