Heavy Weather is Weather Report's seventh album and is considered a milestone in jazz-rock .

General

The 1976 recorded album was released in 1977 on Columbia Records . It was the group's second album with the electric bass virtuoso Jaco Pastorius , who played on all of the pieces for the first time. The song Birdland , which is now considered the jazz standard , was released for the first time on the album Heavy Weather . At Birdland is an instrumental composition by Joe Zawinul, who like many bands, including Buddy Rich , Maynard Ferguson's big band and The Manhattan Transfer (as a vocal piece with lyrics by Jon Hendricks was acquired), the repertoire. Birdland is named after a jazz club in New York, Birdland , which in turn was named after Charlie Parker's nickname , Bird , who often performed at the club. The play is a tribute to Parker and the club the young Zawinul had often visited and where he met his future wife.

The album marked the breakthrough for Jaco Pastorius, who not only contributed two pieces of his own -  Teen Town and Havona - but also had a significant influence on the sound design of this production as a co-producer.

Impact history

The magazine Down Beat reviewed the album in May 1977, where it received the highest rating (5 stars), although the reviewer did not approve two tracks. But the other pieces are of such quality that the album can be classified as a delicacy ("Smörgasbröd"). Other reviews also praised the album similarly. For Pat Metheny , it's Weather Report's best record. The album sold more than half a million times in the United States alone and, according to Ralf Dombrowski , "became a paradigmatic album for the following years of jazz rock and pop."

The music magazine Jazzwise added the album to The 100 Jazz Albums That Shook the World list ; Stuart Nicholson wrote:

“Sometimes, when listening to Weather Report at their best and this is one of their very best, it's worth pinching yourself as a reminder that at their heart, this band comprised one of jazz's most basic jazz configurations. It's simply, saxophone, piano, bass, drums and percussion. Then, listen to 'Birdland', later covered by Manhattan Transfer and Maynard Ferguson , and wonder. Listen to the boost Pastorius gives the band, especially on his own compositions Havona and Teen Town . Reaching number 30 on the Billboard album chart, even today Heavy Weather remains as stunning in its overall effect as the day it was made. "
