Birgit Friedrich
Birgit Friedrich , born as Birgit Stemmann , after marriage to Birgit Füchtmeyer , (born September 25, 1961 ) is a former German judoka . She was European Champion in 1981, European Championship runner-up in 1985 and European Championship third place in 1983 and 1984.
Athletic career
Birgit Friedrich fought in the super lightweight, the weight class up to 48 kilograms. She competed for PSV Braunschweig and for the Judo Crocodiles Osnabrück . She was German champion in 1980, 1984, 1985 and 1987, in 1988 she was second behind Natascha Meisler , in 1989 and 1990 behind Kerstin Emich .
At the European Championships in Madrid in 1981 , Friedrich defeated the Italian Anna De Novellis in the final . In 1982 at the World Championships in Paris , she was eliminated in the round of 16 against the Canadian Tina Takahashi . The following year she lost in the round of 16 of the 1983 European Championships in Genoa to the British Karen Briggs ; after two victories in the round of hope, Friedrich defeated the Finn Jaana Ronkainen in the battle for a bronze medal . She also won a bronze medal at the 1984 European Championships in Pirmasens. In November at the World Championships in Vienna , she reached the quarter-finals and then eliminated against the Australian Julie Reardon . At the end of 1984 she received a bronze medal at the World Student Championships.
In 1985 at the European Championships in Landskrona , Friedrich reached the final with a victory over the Finn Eira Helenius and received the silver medal behind the French Marie-France Colignon . At the end of 1985 Birgit Friedrich also won a silver medal with the German team at the European Team Championships. At the European Championships in 1986 , she finished seventh. At the 1986 and 1987 World Championships , Birgit Friedrich was eliminated in the round of 16. In 1988 she won bronze again at the World Student Championships.
