Birgitta Ashoff (born December 1, 1948 in Essen-Bredeney ) is a German film director , screenwriter and journalist . She lives in Berlin and Rome .

Life

Birgitta Ashoff completed her studies in German and geography at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg . She completed her second degree in theater studies and philosophy at the University of Vienna , where she received her doctorate in 1978. Already during her studies she presented her own weekly radio program "Wednesday Journal" for Südwestfunk Baden-Baden. At the same time she began her journalistic work as an author for the Basler Nachrichten, from 1980 for the Süddeutsche Zeitung , Die Zeit and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung . Above all, she wrote artist portraits and travel reports for the FAZ magazine and the FAZ supplement “Pictures and Times”. In addition to her work as a feature writer (with Yves Montand and Nino Rota, among others ) in the radio culture department of Sender Freies Berlin , she has worked as a director and screenwriter for ARD since 1974, and later also for arte. Encouraged by encounters with the directors Louis Malle and Federico Fellini , about whom she made a film portrait (ARD / NDR) in 1985, she decided to work primarily as a freelance director.

She interviewed and shot a. a. with Irmgard Keun, Herbert von Karajan, Jorge Luis Borges, Nina Berberova, Italo Calvino, Natalia Ginzburg, Giorgio Bassani, Alberto Moravia, Jorge Semprun, Philippe Jaccottet, Gisèle Freund, John Berger, John Updike, John Irving, Steve Reich, Pierre Boulez , Gae Aulenti, Renzo Piano, Claudio Abbado, Maurizio Pollini, Frank O. Gehry, Lucinda Childs and Paul Auster.

To date, more than 150 documentaries have been made, which have mainly been shown on television, but also at international festivals.
