The birch settlement is located south of the Eichethofsiedlung in the south of the city of Salzburg, next to the Gneis district, embedded on all sides in the eastern green space of the Leopoldskron moor. It is run together with the Eichethofsiedlung under the district name Gneis Süd . The moor meadows there on the Almkanal were once called Anifer Wiesen . In the area of the birch settlement ends in the south of the polluted willow trees on the Almkanal , since here to the south the alpine wood , which has existed for many centuries, was used , which in historical times provided the slaughtering (bank protection by vertical wooden walls) of the Almkanal. The main residence of the small birch settlement has only 300 inhabitants.

The settlement emerged essentially between 1960 and 1975 and developed from two farms that were built on Kneisslweg after 1900 - in the still independent municipality of Leopoldskron. The streets there are named after trees that are typical of the area (birch, willow, alder, pine). This settlement has been connected to public transport by bus (line C) since around 1970 and by trolleybus line 5 since 1981 .
