Bishar Abdirahman Hussein is a Kenyan diplomat and has been Director General of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), a specialized agency of the United Nations based in Bern, since 2012 .

Career

Bishar Abdirahman Hussein began his post-career in 1994 as a management trainee at Kenya Posts & Telecommunications Corporation. He rose quickly and became the organization's first Postmaster General in 1999 . He took them out of the red and made them a profitable and successful postal company. In 2002 he was appointed Ambassador of Kenya to the United Arab Emirates for six years with responsibility for the entire Gulf region . From 2008 to 2012 he was Chairman of the UPU Council of Administration, he also chaired the 24th UPU Congress in Genoa in 2008 and the UPU Strategy Conference in Nairobi in September 2010, which paved the way for the decisions at the 2012 Universal Postal Congress in Doha .

At the 25th UPU Congress in Doha on October 10, 2012, he was elected Director General of the UPU. At the 26th UPU Congress in Istanbul he was re-elected for a further term. In 2019, on the 145th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union, one of the oldest international organizations in the world, he emphasized the importance of the global postal network for worldwide communication and the responsibility for the establishment, development and further development of networks in times of revolutionary technical developments. "Today we are closer to our customers than ever before."

Awards

Hussein was awarded a BA honoris causa in Political Science and Sociology from the University of Nairobi .
