history
The Brisbane family had owned what is now Bishopton's lands since 1332 . After 1671 they changed hands several times. Bishopton developed slowly and had a population of 341 in 1861. In 1937 Bishopton became the location of a Royal Ordnance Factory for ammunition production. 10,000 workers were already employed at the same location during the First World War . By 1961 the population rose to 1586. In 1991 there were already 5,394 people in Bishopton. Most recently, the number of inhabitants decreased slightly, so that only 5157 people were counted in the 2001 census and 4708 in 2011.
traffic
The M8 connects Bishopton directly to the trunk road network. The A8 runs directly through the city center on its section between Glasgow and Greenock. As early as the 19th century, the Caledonian Railway Bishopton connected to the railway network. The station was served by the Glasgow, Paisley and Greenock Railway . Today the station is on the Inverclyde Line of First ScotRail . Glasgow International Airport is three miles to the southeast. Renfrew Airport , located south of Renfrew , was in operation until 1966 .
