description
The round tower made of granite and syenite stones has a square base with an edge length of 7.40 m and ends at the top in a square structure with a viewing platform. Access to the 12.3 m high tower is on the eastern side and leads to the entrance area via a 1.70 m wide stone staircase with ten steps. Inside, a spiral staircase with 51 stone steps leads to the viewing platform at a height of 11.1 m. The building stands in the middle of a square terrace with a side length of 12.80 m.
Building history
The forerunner of the Bismarckwarte was a temple built in 1896 on the Litzelröder Höhe. On May 22, 1903, the Council of Churches Freienseher and Mayor Schnellbächer suggested the construction of a Bismarck Observatory to replace the temple. Members of the local Odenwald Club and the city administration's beautification association formed a committee to set up the control room. The total cost of 9,000 marks was financed through donations and income from several local events. The tower was built according to plans by Prof. Ferdinand Luthmer from Frankfurt am Main between May 1, 1906 and July 7, 1907; the last thorough renovation took place in 1997/98.
On July 15, 2007, an anniversary celebration took place on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Bismarckwarte. On March 27, 2010, a noise fire was lit on the tower in the course of a partially historically recreated signal chain from the Rhine to the Main .
Every year around June 21st, the Lindenfels volunteer fire brigade organizes a solstice celebration at the Bismarckwarte.
Others
A conspicuously large windsock is attached to the parapet of the viewing platform. A helicopter landing pad is located about 40 m away on an open area southeast of the tower.
