Pope John Paul II founded it with the Apostolic Constitution Ad aptius fovendum on June 10, 1995 from cession of territory by the Diocese of Abomey and it was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Cotonou as a suffragan diocese. The first local ordinary was Antoine Ganyé from the foundation of the diocese until his appointment as Archbishop of Cotonou on August 21, 2010.
