history
Pope John Paul II founded it with the Apostolic Constitution Ad plenius on June 15, 2001 from cession of territory by the Diocese of Marsabit and it was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Nyeri as a suffragan diocese. The local ordinary Virgilio Pante has been IMC since it was founded .
On September 30, 2006, James Lomulen Kayanda, the first Jesuit of the Turkana ethnic group, was ordained a priest in the Diocese .
