The immediate diocese Nicopolis ( Latin : Dioecesis Nicopolitanus ) of the Roman Catholic Church , located in Bulgaria , was established in 1789 and covers an area of 43,241 km². The bishopric is in Ruse .
About 30,000 Catholics live in the 18 parishes of the diocese , which makes up about 1% of the population living there. Pastoral care is provided by four diocesan and 14 religious priests. At the same time there are 15 friars and 20 sisters. In 1968 there were 113 nuns, but their number hit a low point in 1987 at eleven and is slowly increasing again.
