Bitbucket Server (formerly known as Stash) is a software for managing Git - repository of the Australian company Atlassian . It is a web-based application written in Java .

Functionality

Bitbucket Server is operated via a web interface . All projects to which the logged in user has access are displayed on the entry page. The repositories belonging to the project are listed on the project page. A repository is a project archive that combines files that belong together in the form of a directory structure. For a repository, you can see all branches of development as well as all changes to program files , pull requests and the authorizations of the individual users. Branches also via the web interface can be merge . Two branches are merged into one development line again. You can also create new branches and pull requests. A pull request is a request to review changes to the source code from one branch and merge them into another development branch. Bitbucket Server enables automatic notification of pull requests via email. For example, the auditors involved are informed of new pull requests. In addition, the person who made the pull request will be informed whether the request was approved or denied.

Bitbucket Server has detailed authorizations. A distinction is made between read, write and administrator rights , which can be assigned to individual users or groups of users. This can be done at project, repository and branch level.

The functionality of Bitbucket Server can be expanded with add-ons . These are offered by Atlassian and you have the option of creating new plug-ins yourself .

One of the characteristics of Atlassian products is that they can be integrated with one another. This is also the case with Bitbucket Server. One possibility is integration with JIRA . The associated branches, commits and pull requests from Bitbucket server are displayed on the page of a JIRA entry. You can also create new branches from there. Conversely, the corresponding JIRA tickets are also displayed in Bitbucket Server. The HipChat chat service can also be used to notify developers and the crowd for user and group management as well as for user authentication. Repositories and branches from Bitbucket Server can be integrated into the CI server Bamboo . This shows the last build result for the commits and branches in Bitbucket Server. Bitbucket server repositories can also be cloned in SourceTree .
