Life

From 1862 he studied medicine at the University of Pavia , where he immediately worked in the experimental physiological laboratory. He later continued his studies in Zurich and Berlin . He came into contact with Rudolf Virchow , Rudolf Albert Kölliker and Heinrich Frey , with whom he remained in contact throughout his life. The 16-year-old presented his first publication during his studies.

In 1866 he received his doctorate and took over the management of the laboratory. The following year he replaced Paolo Mantegazza , who went to Florence, and at the age of 21 he held the Chair of General Pathology in Pavia.

Research and teaching

Even as a student, Bizzozero recognized the blood-forming property of the bone marrow. His later research focuses on hematology , especially hematopoiesis (blood formation) and hemostasis (blood clotting), as well as various tumors, the histology of the molluscum contagiosum , blood formation in birds and the histology and physiology of the endocrine glands. In December 1881 he discovered the importance of thrombocytes (blood platelets), which had already been described by Max Schultze in 1865 as the third corpuscular component of blood .

The scientists he trained also include Camillo Golgi , Guido Tizzoni (1853–1932), Gaetano Salvioli (1853–1888), Pio Foà (1848–1922) and Camillo Bozzolo (1845–1920). He founded the prestigious journal Archivio di Scienze Mediche .
