Blanche d'Artois ( Spanish Blanca de Navarra ; * 1248 ; † May 2, 1302 in Paris ) became Countess of Champagne and the Brie region through her marriage . Through the early death of her husband, she also became regent of the Kingdom of Navarre .

biography

Blanche was a daughter of Count Robert I von Artois († 1250) and his wife Mathilde von Brabant († 1288). She was a niece of King Louis IX. of France , also known as "Saint Louis".

1. Marriage

Blanche was married in Melun in 1269 to Prince Henry of Navarra-Champagne , with whom she succeeded in the Kingdom of Navarre and the county of Champagne-Brie a year later . After her son Thibaut had died in 1273 and her husband also died the following year, Blanche took over the reign of her underage heir, Johanna I. , who was born in 1271. In the same year, a revolt broke out in Pamplona against the French influence in Navarre Blanche urged to go with her daughter to the court of her cousin King Philip III. to flee from France . Due to the influence of his uncle Karl von Anjou , Blanche transferred the guardianship of her daughter to the French king in Orléans in May 1275 , from whom she received military support, which led to the suppression of the uprising the following year. Furthermore, her daughter was betrothed to Prince Philip ; after the death of his older brother in 1276, he became crown prince himself and was to become King of France as Philip IV in 1285. The couple's wedding was celebrated in 1284; in the same year Blanche's reign ended.
