Blasius (Blaise) Sigibald Kurz (born February 3, 1894 in Sontheim , † December 13, 1973 in Waldsassen ) was a German Franciscan (OFM) and Roman Catholic bishop .

Life

Sigebald Kurz entered the Franciscan order in 1914 and was given the name Blasius. He was ordained a priest on December 21, 1919 . From 1923 he served as a missionary in China for ten years. On July 11, 1939 he was appointed Vicar Apostolic of Kokstad (South Africa) and on October 29, 1939 in Rome by Pope Pius XII. personally ordained titular bishop of Terenuthis . In 1946 he resigned his position as Apostolic Vicar and returned to Germany. On May 21, 1948 he was appointed Apostolic Prefect of Yongzhou (Lingling) in China, but was soon prevented from performing his office there by the Communists and, like all foreign missionaries, expelled from China.

From 1951 he is known as Blaise S. Kurz in the USA and looked after Catholic refugees from China there. 1962-1965 he took part in the Second Vatican Council. In America he became the bishop-moderator of the 1964 old ritualistic "Catholic Traditionalist Movement" and supported its founder, Gommar A. DePauw († May 6, 2005), in the struggle to preserve the so-called Tridentine liturgy . In 1967 DePauw asked Pope Paul VI for Bishop Kurz . in vain permission to ordain American ancient ritualists as bishops.

In 1969 Kurz returned to Germany and worked as a pastor in the St. Martin retirement home in Waldsassen ( Upper Palatinate ). A few months before his death, the Apostolic Prefect Blasius Kurz ordained the conservative German theologian Günther Storck as a priest on September 21, 1973 in Egg ZH , who later joined Marcel Lefebvre and then ML Guérard des Lauriers . As early as 1970, Kurz had ordained the Swiss ancient ritualist Felix C. Jeker (1944–1990) as priest of his nominally still existing Apostolic Prefecture, who received his doctorate from the Angelicum in canon law as its priest .

Bishop Kurz was buried in the Franciscan grave in the Nuremberg South Cemetery.
