The Blasiuskapelle in Briach is a chapel in the hamlet of Briach in the municipality of Baienfurt in the Upper Swabian district of Ravensburg .

History, location and structure

In 1252, Briach came into the possession of Weingarten Abbey . The easted chapel is located, somewhat hidden, in the middle of the hamlet of Briach. You can reach it via the junction from Landstrasse 314 at the level of the Sterkshof via the K 7949 in the direction of Köpfingen. The building and site of the chapel belong to the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart . The chapel is located between a residential building and an agricultural property.

In the choir of the chapel there are remains of Romanesque masonry. It originated in the dispute between the Guelphs and Staufers over the Duchy of Swabia . At the end of the 17th century , the chapel was significantly changed, lengthened to the west, the windows in the nave - three on the long wall and one on the west gable - were enlarged to form arched windows and a flatter, beaver-tailed sacristy was added. The sacristy in the east has three transverse oval windows. On the eastern ridge there is a baroque spire with a bell. The top of the roof ridge, made of gilded sheet metal, is decorated with a holy blood reliquary in a halo. In the roof turret there is a bell cage and bell.

The Blasius Chapel was named "Monument of the Month" by the Baden-Württemberg Monument Foundation in October 2013 .

Mother of Sorrows and memorial picture to the fallen soldiers in 2012

The late Gothic altar was redesigned in 1852. The altarpiece shows a scene from the life of St. Blaise . Above the altar sculptures of Saints Agatha (left) and Saint Blaise is a crescent moon Madonna with child from 1520. The wooden sculptures to the left and right of the altar show a standing Madonna and child from the first half of the 16th century in the manner of Multscher , without veil and a 65 cm high Blasius figure from the first half of the 14th century. The blowhole sculpture made from hardwood is thus one of the oldest figures in Baienfurt.

There are eight panels in the chapel. They deal with the subjects and persons of the crucifixion . Descent from the Cross , Coronation of Mary , Mother of Sorrows , St. Nepomuk , St. Joseph , miraculous image of Mariahilf and Mary of the Blood.

The names of three fallen soldiers are recorded on the picture of Our Lady of Sorrows. The entire equipment of the chapel refers to the owner of the chapel, the former Weingarten Abbey and the founding family of the monastery, the Guelphs . The single-nave hall building was renovated in 1980 and furnished in color with white walls, gray stucco profiles, pink throats and mirror surfaces.

On Blasiustag (February 3rd) there is a procession of the parish of Baienfurt to the Blasius Chapel.
