The Blue Lake is an artificial lake between Hüttenrode and Rübeland in the Harz Mountains , not far from Bundesstraße 27 . The lake was created as part of mining activities in this region.

Geology and formation of the lake

Where since 1885 operated limestone quarry on Garkenholz was limestone to quicklime dismantled. Remnants of a ring furnace in the immediate vicinity of the lake are evidence of this limestone mining. The shaft furnace also present here was completely demolished. At the quarries Am Garkenholz , middle to Upper Devonian reef limestone was mined on the southern flank of the Braunesumpf volcanic eruption in the transition to the Hüttenröder Mulde . The to east to northeast incident Riffschutt- and lagoon limestones are partially, such as, at the outlet of the lake with hematite mineralized. In the eastern quarry area, the limestones are tectonically heavily stressed and intensively karstified . In the existing crevices, younger, pelagic limestones are embedded in the form of Upper Devonian to Lower Carboniferous Neptunian corridors . At the upper edge of the quarry, karst cavities filled with tertiary clay are exposed. The limestones mined here are characterized by an average very high calcium carbonate content (> 96%). The main mining was stopped after the Second World War and the limestone ash was filled into the remaining open pit . In 1955, the dismantling was finally shut down and the production facilities were gradually dismantled.

The actual lake, which is up to 6 meters deep, is fed by several karst springs. The water is oversaturated with calcium , so that calcium carbonate is precipitated and suspended matter and algae are encrusted so that they sink to the bottom. Due to the clean water, the lake appears bright blue in spring. In summer the water turns green due to the decrease in the volume of the springs and the increase in suspended matter and algae. In summer and autumn the water seeps through cracks in the limestone subsoil, so that the lake sometimes dries up in winter, in spring it then fills up with water again and the cycle starts all over again.

Protection status and geotouristic use

The Blue Lake is located in the conservation area resin and Northern Harz region and in the Harz nature park . It was classified by the State Office for Geology and Mining as a valuable geotope (No. 4231/2) and is used today for geotourism . Near the lake, which is also a geopoint in the Harz Geopark - Braunschweiger Land - Ostfalen . an information board has been set up.
