The Blaupunkt flute fish can reach a maximum length of two meters, but usually stays at a length of 1.20 meters (excluding the long tail thread). The number of vertebrae is 87. The first four vertebrae have grown together. The caudal fin ends in a long filament.
The blue dot flute fish is brownish on the top, lighter on the underside and has a row of light blue dots on the middle of the back from the head to the dorsal fin as well as on the middle of the body sides and two rows on the side of the tubular mouth. The rows of dots on the sides of the body merge into lines towards the tail.
