The Blautopf (also called the little Blautopf ) is a karst spring in Essing an der Altmühl , in the Franconian Alb in Lower Bavaria .

description

Outflow from the source
Weihermühlkapelle

The Blautopf is located in the Weihermühle district of Essing on the edge of the forest on the northern slope of the Altmühltal at about 355  m above sea level. NN . It is one of the typical geological phenomena of the Jura . The karst spring pours an average of around 300 liters of water per second (maximum 4500 l / s). The source pot of the Weihermühlenbach, which is under nature protection, is dammed by a weir . The karst water has a temperature of 8 ° C all year round and is almost of drinking water quality. The catchment area of the Blautopf extends to the sinkholes near Maierhofen . To distinguish it from another karst spring, the Swabian Blautopf near Blaubeuren , this spring pot is also called the Kleiner Blautopf near Essing . In contrast to the Swabian Blautopf, its name comes from the bluish color of the spring water. Due to the dolomite content in the underground cave sand, the water contains magnesium . Trout live in the water .

Originally the source was used to operate the Weihermühle and later to generate electricity. For unexplained reasons, the Blautopf dried up briefly in 1692. The residents built a small votive chapel ( Weihermühlkapelle ) out of gratitude when it was bubbling again , which is still there and is maintained.

The outflowing Weihermühlbach soon bends at the edge of the valley road in the direction of the Altmühl to the east and after a total of about 0.6 km flows into an oxbow river of the Altmühl at the edge of Essing .

The source is designated as a geotope by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment. The source is privately owned and can only be reached via the public hiking trail over the street Am Schlossberg .
