Blitzkrieg was published in Germany on March 28, 2003. The graphics engine is comparable to Sudden Strike . The game is played in an isometric 2D view.

Game mechanics

The player starts the campaign through Poland , where he has to carry out individual missions a little later. The player cannot set up a base or a headquarters, so the player is dependent on his troop strength and cannot order supplies. This can then also decide whether to win or lose. As soon as the player destroys opponents, he gathers more and more information and experience.

In order to represent the military situation in a neutral way, the player not only commands the German armed forces , but also the allies , for example the armed forces of the USSR . As soon as missions have been completed, the player can select new weapon techniques and use them.

Blitzkrieg - Burning Horizon

content

Burning Horizon is the sequel to the first game. The graphics engine stayed the same. A “Far East scenario”, an improved AI, new units and 26 new missions were added as innovations. "Burning Horizon" is a stand-alone extension, i. This means that it can also run without the basic game. It was developed by the La Plata company. The producer of the game was Martin Deppe.

Game mechanics

As before, more or less known battles of World War II form the template for the missions. Since “Burning Horizon” contains both the old scenarios of the base game and the new and many new units, the expansion offers a significantly longer game time, with the scenarios in Europe and North Africa ranging from battles in France, Libya and Sicily to larger battles such as the Battle of the Bulge and the First Battle of El Alamein range. There are eight more missions to complete around the Sea of Japan . The larger number of military units - 56 were newly included, including from Japan - as well as new tanks and weapons make the missions easier, but require more strategic thinking.

Compared to the basic version of Blitzkrieg, which sometimes seems very static, the game mechanics of Burning Horizon are more lively and appear more dynamic. The game landscape shows more graphic details.

Blitzkrieg - Rolling Thunder

content

Rolling Thunder is also a stand-alone expansion. Graphics engine and mission rank are unchanged. The developer was again the game company La Plata.

Game mechanics

The player fights on the side of the Americans, with the famous tank general Patton at his side as commander . As part of this campaign he fights against the troops of the Wehrmacht, whereby the player then has to fight missions such as Operation Husky , Operation Cobra or the battles for North Africa. Furthermore, he has to fight his way through the "desert foxes" with his campaign. The so-called desert foxes are Rommel's units that he commands in Africa. In one of these missions, the player will encounter a German arms factory that he is supposed to destroy. Overall, the game also offers single player missions, but also new features such as: B. Minefield plans and the ability to take prisoners of war. When the player has reached the last mission, he will be transferred to the Battle of Stalingrad .

"Blitzkrieg - Burning Horizon" was - according to the then Licensing Director Frank Heukemes - the best-selling extension in the company history of the publisher CDV. According to the 2004 annual report, around 75,000 copies were sold worldwide within three months of the start of sales. In total, "Burning Horizon" sold over 200,000 times.

Blitzkrieg - Green Devils

content

Green Devils is not an official Blitzkrieg sequel, but (in Germany) an unofficial one, i.e. without the Blitzkrieg logo. In Russia, "Green Devils" was released as an official Blitzkrieg game. "Green Devils", like "Blitzkrieg - Burning Horizon" and "Blitzkrieg - Rolling Thunder", was made by the developers at La Plata Studios. The publisher was again CDV.

Gameplay

For the first time ever, the game features aerial campaigns in which troops can be brought in from airplanes. The air campaigns have also been targeted for new missions. The "Eagles" campaign follows the skirmishes of the famous German paratroopers. Historically, the “9th Panzer” campaign is very precisely based on the battles of the 9th Panzer Division . The battlefields are the Western Front in 1940, Russia, Normandy in 1944 and the Ardennes in 1944/45. This time the game offers even more missionary power than its predecessor. The Paratrooper Eagles make up the great material for the game.

Blitzkrieg 3 was developed by Nival Interactive and has been in Early Access status on Steam since May 6, 2015. The publication was initially planned for the first half of 2016, but did not take place until June 2017. As in the predecessors of the game series, the player takes command of a faction in World War II. The player has the choice between the factions Germany, USA and the Soviet Union. Nival would like to release DLCs in the future that will expand the game's content.

Game mechanics

Blitzkrieg 3 features a historic single player campaign that spans the period from 1939 to 1945. The single player campaign consisted of 15 missions when the game was released. The multiplayer mode of the game enables the creation of a permanent base that can be expanded with the resources gained. The player has the choice between different commanders of his faction which allow different tactics. The player can defend his base against enemy players or attack opposing players or AI-controlled defenses. A PvP mode with direct battles against real players was also planned. Multiplayer fights from one against one to three against three players should be possible.

Contrary to Nival's initial plans to publish the game as Free2Play, the game was finally released in the classic way at the request of many players and only has to be paid once for the game with the single player start campaign and the multiplayer mode. There are no additional in-game payments, microtransactions or premium accounts.
