Blood Drive is an American action - television series with elements of the genre horror and grindhouse . It was produced by Universal Cable Productions and aired on Syfy from June 14th to September 6th, 2017 . Due to bad ratings, the broadcaster did not order another season.

action

The series takes place in a fictional "future" in the United States in 1999. A fracture caused by fracking literally divides the country through a canyon that runs parallel to the Mississippi River . Due to the lack of raw materials, drinking water is rationed and is only available for payment at filling stations that are similar to ATMs. Gasoline prices have also skyrocketed, peaking at $ 2,000 a gallon .

In Los Angeles , Arthur Bailey, known as "Saint Arthur" by his colleagues and superiors because of his good-naturedness, is hired as an officer of the Contra Crime . After he and his partner Christopher Carpenter want to arrest a man who tried to steal water with a forged credit card, the two noticed strange punctures on the arm of the delinquent . Since drugs like heroin have not been available for a long time, the origin of these scars should be explored. In exchange for the captured water and his freedom, the thief reveals that the police would find answers in a certain warehouse in the industrial area. There the young Grace d'Argento is just registering for a very special race with her first-generation Chevrolet Camaro . Together with illustrious figures like Clown Dick , Caligula and the Gentleman , she wants to take part in a multi-day competition from LA to Phoenix , Arizona , to use the $ 10,000,000 prize money to trigger her sister Karma from the psychiatric institution in Kane Hill. The two police officers are discovered during their observation and while Christopher escapes again, Arthur is forced to take part in the race as Grace's partner; there are several special features. On the one hand, the respective team partners are bound to one another by means of injected electrodes . If one of the two strays too far from the other or if both deviate from the planned route, the inclined race director Julian Slink receives a signal and can henceforth use a remote control to bring both drivers to their knees using individually timed power surges and bring them to reason . In addition, all participating vehicles are equipped with a special engine that runs on human blood instead of conventional fuel. In the course of the tour, the participants get to do with bloodthirsty cannibals , additive- dependent mutants or a defensive group of office workers. Meanwhile, Christopher is being dragged deeper and deeper into the maw of the seemingly ubiquitous Heart Enterprises organization . This seems to control everything from the addictive Smax chocolate bar to the water filling machines to the police equipment. In addition, their top management seems to have a special interest in taking over the Blood Drive race.

criticism

The first season of Blood Drive received mostly positive reviews, for example a Metascore of 64/100 on Metacritic , based on 12 evaluated reviews. Daniel Fienberg ( The Hollywood Reporter ) was "well entertained" and was "tied up for an unexpectedly long time".

“ Blood Drive is a (sic!) Explicit roller coaster ride that is wonderfully exaggerated and crazy at times. [...] After the good opening sequence, I am now curious whether the series has enough feed to function over several episodes or whether a lean, 90-minute film would have done it here. 'Blood Drive' is definitely not reinventing the wheel, but it is a whimsical genre offshoot to make friends with. "
