Blumenberg is a district in the north of Cologne on the left bank of the Rhine in the district of Chorweiler .

location

Blumenberg borders Worringen in the north and Fühlingen in the east . Chorweiler is located south of Blumenberg . In the west of Blumenberg there are fields that in turn border a forest area in the south of Roggendorf / Thenhoven , which is crossed by the Cologne-Neuss-Krefeld railway line. The Weiler waterworks is located even further to the west. Blumenberg is approx. 12 km as the crow flies from the center of Cologne, the nature reserve of the Worringer Bruch and the Fühlinger See are nearby.

history

A settlement on the lower terrace of the Rhine seems to have existed as early as prehistoric times , as has been shown by soil surveys by the Rhenish Office for the Preservation of Land Monuments. Two excavations in 1988/89 and 1990/91 led to traces of early settlements in what is now the district area from around 3500 to 4000 BC. Remains of eleven farm settlements with pile dwellings from around 1000 BC were found.

In the Middle Ages, the Battle of Worringen took place on June 5, 1288 in the Fühlinger Heide. Part of it is the area of today's Blumenberg. It belonged to the mayor's office of Worringen until 1922 and was incorporated into Cologne under Lord Mayor Konrad Adenauer . The view was an expansion of the city to the north.

After the destruction of the Second World War in Cologne city center, planning began for the construction of the "New City" in the north of Cologne, from which some parts of the current borough of Chorweiler emerged. Blumenberg had been planned as a district since 1963 and, once completed, should offer living space for 5,000 residents. However, construction did not begin until 1986. The S-Bahn connection was completed in 1997.

The name Blumenberg for the district was decided on October 7, 1963 by the city council and, like the Blumenbergsweg, which has existed for a long time, probably goes back to the former Bloemberger Hof , which can be traced back to the area since 1602. The name of this farm can be understood as a euphemism for the "Blutberg", the site of the Battle of Worringen . A nearby field path on the southern edge of the Worringer Bruch parallel to the Blumenbergsweg is called Am Blutberg.

Many young families decided to move to this relatively natural residential area during the development phase of Blumenberg, not only because of the low house and land prices at the time.

Settlement structure

Single-family houses in Blumenberg
Apartment buildings in Blumenberg

Initially planned as a construction area exclusively for single-family houses, there are also several multi-family houses in Blumenberg.

A settlement of 16 row houses in the district forms one of the oldest eco-settlements in Germany. Here, ecological considerations were followed both in terms of the water supply and disposal (process water cycle, greywater use, rainwater use) and the construction method.

traffic

Blumenberg S-Bahn station

Blumenberg is connected to the rail network with the S-Bahn line 11 , which runs in a tunnel , so that Cologne Central Station can be reached in around 20 minutes. Since December 16, 2013, bus line 120 has also been traveling to Blumenberg via the Chorweiler district between Monday and Friday from the northern suburbs.

The two local entrances to Blumenberg-Süd and Blumenberg-Nord (roundabouts) are on a country road (Tempo 50) with a noise barrier. Going south from Chorweiler it turns into a motor vehicle (Tempo 70), which leads via the districts of Volkhoven / Weiler , Lindweiler and Pesch to the Cologne-North motorway junction and into Cologne city center.

Since October 2008, Blumenberg has been completely in the 30 km / h zone. Narrowing lanes, dead ends and footpaths closed to car traffic have been part of the traffic calming concept since the beginning of the settlement.
